A memorable day in the CENT Lab is when a new student or post-doctoral fellow joins the group. We also recognize and celebrate different awards, recognitions and grants won by different lab members. Below is the chronology of significant events in the CENT Lab.
- April 27, 2013: Ibrahim Youssef joins CENT Lab as a visiting scholar. Welcome to the group.
- April 20, 2013: Lisa Dressler joins CENT Lab as a visiting scholar. Welcome to the group.
- March 29, 2013: Sibu Kuruvilla received the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. CONGRADULATIONS.
- January 20, 2013: Dr. El-Sayed Khafagy joins CENT Lab as a visiting scholar. Welcome to the group.
- May 18, 2012: CENT LAB celebrates Scott's graduation of his doctoral degree with dinner and bowling afterward. Congratulations, Scott, and we wish you the best of luck in the future. You can check out the pictures here.
- October 27, 2011: CENT LAB (Yasemine, Scott, Yen-Ling, Jack, and Omer) participates with five posters in the Macromolecular Science & Engineering 35th Annual Symposium. Congratulations to Yasemine and Omer who received Frank E. Filisko Poster Award.
- August 12, 2011: CENT LAB (Yasemine, Scott, Yen-Ling, Jack, Omer, Charity, and Mohamed) participates with five posters in the 3rd Controlled Release Society-Illinois Student Chapter Symposium in Chicago. Congratulations to Yen-Ling Lin and Scott H. Medina won the Second and Third Prize in poster presentation competition, respectively. You can view the picture of the group in this meeting here. - June 14, 2011: Dr. Gopinath Tiruchinapally joins CENT LAB as a post-doctoral research fellow. Welcome to the group.
- May 23, 2011: Jack Wang presented a poster at the Annual Microfluidics in Biomedical Sciences Training Program Symposium 2011 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
- May 12-13, 2011: Dr. El-Sayed gave a talk at the Upper Midwest Biomaterials Day in Ann Arbor, MI. His talk was titled "Rational Design and Synthesis of Enzyme-Sensitive Particles for Targeted Delivery of Anticancer Drugs".
- May 12-13, 2011: Dr. Yasemine Durmaz, Scott Medina, Yen-Ling Lin, and Jack Wang presented 4 posters at the Upper Midwest Biomaterials Day in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
- April 18, 2011: Dr. Yasemine Durmaz, Scott Medina, Yen-Ling Lin, and Jack Wang presented 4 posters at the Herbert D. Doan Nanotechnology Symposium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jack Wang and Yen-Ling Lin received second and third place poster awards, respectively. Dr. Yasemine Durmaz received honorable mention poster award. Congratulations to the group.
- April 15, 2011: Dr. Yasemine Durmaz, Scott Medina, Yen-Ling Lin, and Jack Wang presented 4 posters at the Cellular Biotechnology Training Program Symposium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
- March 20, 2011: Dr. El-Sayed was invited by the Biomedical Engineering Society Chapter at the University of Michigan to give a seminar, which was titled "Development of Stimuli-Sensitive Carriers for Enhanced Cytoplasmic Delivery of Therapeutic Macromolecules".
- March 15, 2011: Dr. Yasemine Durmaz receives Susan G. Komen Translational Research Postdoctoral Fellowship award. Congratulations, Yasemin.
- March 7, 2011: Dr. El-Sayed gave a talk at the University of Michigan Urology Department. His talk was titled "Development of Targeted Nanoparticles for Focal Prostate Cancer Therapy".
- February 25, 2011: Dr. Maxim Chevliakov accepts an offer to join Boehringer Ingelheim as a research scientist. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. You can check out the pictures of his farewell lunch here.
- February 1, 2011: Asheema Saripalli and Donald Tay joins CENT LAB for undergraduate research experience. Welcome to the group.
- November 12, 2010: Dr. Yasemine Durmaz, Scott Medina, Yen-Ling Lin, and Jack Wang presented 4 posters at the University of Michigan Engineering Graduate Symposium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
- October 31, 2010: Matt LaVelle graduates with a M.S. in biomedical engineering, congratulations. Matt is currently working on a year-long research internship at University of Columbia, school of medicine, and is preparing his application to the medical school. We wish him the best of luck.
- October 6-9, 2010: Scott Medina, Yen-Ling Lin, and Jack Wang presented 3 posters and 1 oral presentation at the Biomedical Engineering Society Meeting in Austin, Texas.
- October 3-5, 2010: Dr. El-Sayed was invited to give a talk at 8th International Nanomedicine and Drug Delivery Symposium in Omaha, Nebraska. The talk is titled "Design and Evaluation of Smart Degradable Particles for Effective Gene Silencing".
- September 9, 2010: Dr. El-Sayed was invited to give a talk at the University of Southern California Department of Chemical Engineering and Material Sciences titled "Smart Degradable Particles for Targeted Gene Silencing".
- September 3, 2010: Omer Aydin joins the CENT LAB as a graduate student. Welcome to the group.
- August 8, 2010: Dr. El-Sayed was invited to give a talk at the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences titled "Smart Degradable Particles for Cytoplasmic Delivery of Nucleic Acids".
- July 14, 2010: Congratulations to Jack Wang who received a fellowship from the Microfluidics in Biomedical Sciences Training Program for the 2010-2011 academic year.
- July 12, 2010: Dr. Hosam Abdelhady joins CENT LAB as a visiting faculty to work on a collaborative project evaluating the morphology and stability of dendriplexes using atomic force microscopy.
- July 7, 2010: Charity Wallace joins the CENT LAB as a PREP student. Welcome to the group.
- June 25, 2010: Congratulations to Layla Houshmand and Marina Vigen who received GAANN fellowships for the 2010-2011 academic year.
- June 1, 2010: Dr. El-Sayed joins the Macromolecular Science & Engineering Program. Congratulations! (CENT Lab welcomes graduate students from the MACRO program to join the group)
- April 29-30, 2010: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed gives invited talks at the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Texas-Arlington and the Chemistry Department at Southern Methodist University.
- April 26, 2010: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed gives an invited talk at the University of Illinois-Chicago, College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and meets with members of the Controlled Release Society Student Chapter.
- April 22, 2010: Steffi Sunny concludes her co-op training in our laboratory and returns back to University of Waterloo to continue her studies in the materials sciences program. We wish her the best of luck.
- April 21, 2010: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed gives an invited talk titled, ""Intelligent" Particles for Effective Intracellular Delivery of Macromolecular Therapeutics" at Ohio State University, Biomedical Engineering Department.
- April 1, 2010: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed receives a 3rd year of funding on the Coulter Grant. Congratulations!
- February 22, 2010: Dr. Yasemin Durmaz joins the group as a postdoctoral fellow. Yasemin comes to us from Turkey after finishing her Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Technology from Istanbul Technical University. Welcome to the group.
- September 28-30, 2009: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed gave three invited talks at the German University, National Research Center, and Misr International University in Cairo, Egypt.
- September 5, 2009: We welcome Layla Houshmand, Katawut Namdee, and Marina Vigen to our group. All of them are currently first year graduate students in the department of Biomedical Engineering.
- June 3, 2009: Congratulations to Matthew LaVelle who received summer fellowship from the Cancer Research Summer Internship Program.
- May 29, 2009: CENT LAB (Scott, Yen-Ling, Stephanie, Jack, and Mohamed) participates with four posters in the 1st Controlled Release Society-Illinois Student Chapter Symposium in Chicago. - May 15, 2009: Steven Koski completes his research at the CENT LAB and moves to Texas to start his new job at Lockheed Martin. We wish him the best of luck with his new career.
- May 1, 2009: Kharissa Nitiputri and Grace Ann Escamilla join the CENT LAB. Kharissa and Grace are Marian Sarah Parker Scholars. Welcome to the group.
- May 1, 2009: Congratulations to Lisa Birrell who completed her M.S. in Pharmaceutical Engineering. We wish you all the best with your new job at Merck Inc. in Pennsylvania.
- April 30, 2009: Aashima Jindal completes her undergraduate research experience in CENT LAB. Good luck with your future studies, Aashima.
- April 25, 2009: Steffi Sunny returns back to the University of Waterloo for a summer semester full of classes. We look forward to having her back for a second visit to the CENT LAB this coming fall.
- April 3, 2009: CENT LAB (Scott, Venkatesh, Yen-Ling, Stephanie, and Jack) participates with five posters in the Midwest Biomedical Engineering Conference hosted in Ann Arbor by the UM Biomedical Engineering Department. Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed moderated a discussion session entitled "Hot Topics in Biomedical Engineering: Biomaterials/Drug Delivery". Our student, Lisa Birrell, received an award for her poster presentation. Congratulations, Lisa.
- April 1, 2009: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed receives a 2nd year of funding on the Coulter Grant. Congratulations!
- February 15-18, 2009: CENT LAB (Scott, Venkatesh, Yen-Ling, Stephanie, Jack, Steven, and Mohamed) participates in the 14th International Symposium on Recent Advances in Drug Delivery Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah. - January 6, 2009: We welcome Ms. Steffi Sunny to our group. Steffi is a student in the Nanotechnology Engineering Program at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada and she is visiting the CENT LAB to spend her co-op semester working on optimizing different strategies to enhance drug delivery into breast cancer cells.
- December 22, 2008: CENT LAB says goodbye to Ms. Juliana Valencia Serna, who returned to Colombia to complete her studies. Juliana was a visiting student from the biomedical engineering program at Escuela de Ingenieria de Antioquia and she spent 8 months in our lab. We wish her the best of luck with her career.
- November 30, 2008: Congratulations to Scott Medina and Yen-Ling Lin for passing their qualifying exams and advancing to candidacy!
- November 7, 2008: The CENT LAB actively participated in the College of Engineering Graduate Symposium. Scott Medina, Yen-Ling Lin, Stephanie Grainger, and Steven Koski each had a poster presentation of their research. Jack Wang and Yen-Ling Lin each had an oral presentation as well. - July 14, 2008: Matthew Lavelle, a junior student in the UM-chemical engineering program, joins the CENT LAB for undergraduate research experience. Matt, welcome to the group.
- July 9, 2008: Congratulations to Jack Wang who received a GAANN Fellowship for the academic year of 2008-2009.
- July 7, 2008: Aashima Jindal, a sophomore in the UM-biomedical engineering program, joins the CENT LAB for undergraduate research experience. Welcome to the group, Aashima.
- June 30, 2008: Dr. Guohua Jiang concludes his postdoctoral fellowship in the CENT LAB and moves back to China to start his faculty appointment at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. We wish him the best of luck.
- June 25-28, 2008: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed attends the 2008 Department of Defense Ear of Hope Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. Mohamed presented recent work on the development of "smart" comb-like polymers for enhanced intracellular delivery of nucleic acid drugs.
- June 23, 2008: Dr. Fabrice Audouin joins the CENT LAB. Fabrice is a polymer chemist who will participate in a DOD-sponsored project focusing on the design and synthesis of novel "smart" polymers for delivery of nucleic acid drugs.
- June 11, 2008: Congratulations to Stephanie Grainger who was selected to become a graduate trainee in the Cellular Biotechnology Training Program for the academic year of 2008-2009.
- June 9, 2008: Mohamed R. Issa, a sophomore in the UM-Biopsychology program, joins the CENT LAB as a MedSOAR Fellow for a summer research experience. Welcome to the group, Mohamed.
- May 19, 2008: Dr. Venkatesh Tekumalla joins the CENT LAB. Venkatesh is a synthetic chemist with extensive experience in conjugation and coupling chemistry. His research will focus on development of targeted dendritic carriers.
- May 5, 2008: Lisa Birrell receives a Biomedical Engineering Research Fellowship to sponsor her research training during the summer. Good job, Lisa.
- April 25, 2008: Congratulations to Shreya Raghavan who successfully finished her MS in biomedical engineering. Shreya is moving to a permanent research position at the UM Medical School.
- April 7, 2008: Juliana Valencia joins the CENT LAB as a visiting researcher. Juliana is a senior in the biomedical engineering program at CES University, Antioquia School of Engineering in Medellin, Colombia. We welcome visiting researchers as they enrich our group environment and educate us about their culture.
- April 1, 2008: Jack Wang and Stephanie Grainger receive honorable mention for their NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Applications.
- April 1, 2008: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed receives the Translational Research Partnership in Biomedical Engineering Award sponsored by the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation.
- December 27, 2007: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed receives the NSF Faculty Early Career Development Award (CAREER) sponsored by the US National Science Foundation.
- October 1, 2007: Lisa Birrell, a senior in the UM-biomedical engineering program, joins the CENT LAB for undergraduate research experience. Lisa's research experience is sponsored through the Marian Sarah Parker Scholars Program, which recognizes and supports the professional development of talented young women in engineering.
- September 3, 2007: It is the beginning of a new academic year. We are excited to host Alissa Kerner, Darcee Nelson, and Stephanie Grainger from the incoming graduate students' class for a research rotation. Welcome to U-M. Go BLUE!
- September 3, 2007: Congratulations to Scott Medina who received a GAANN Fellowship for the academic year of 2007-2008.
- June 19, 2007: Jack Wang joins the CENT LAB for a directed research project. Jack is an incoming graduate student who has received a Rackham Merit Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding academic record. Jack's research experience is part of the Rackham Summer Institute, which allows him to get an early start on his graduate career. Welcome to the group, Jack.
- June 11, 2007: Mahbubul Khan, a sophomore in Wayne State Mechanical Engineering program, joins the CENT LAB as a MedSOAR Fellow for a summer research experience. Welcome to the group, Mahbubul.
- May 14, 2007: Dr. Guohua Jiang joins the CENT LAB. Guohua received his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry and physics from Zhejiang University in China and spent one year as a postdoctoral research fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
- May 1, 2007: The setup of the CENT LAB is complete!
- April 27, 2007: Congratulations to Victoria Campbell who successfully finished her MS in biomedical engineering. Victoria will soon start her work as a patent examiner in the US Patent and Trade Office. Thanks, Victoria, for your great help and best of luck with your career.
- March 1, 2007: Yen-Ling Lin joins the CENT LAB to pursue her doctoral degree. Yen received her B.Sc. in biological sciences and technology from the National Chiao-Tung University (Taiwan) and her M.S. in biomedical engineering from National Taiwan University (Taiwan). Welcome to the group.
- December 2006: Scott Medina and Shreya Raghavan join the CENT LAB for their graduate degrees.
- November 13, 2006: Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed joins the UM Biomedical Engineering Department to establish the Cellular Engineering & Nano-Therapeutics Laboratory (CENT LAB).
