Prospective Graduate Students
Application Information
Admission to the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is granted to students who have a superior record of achievement in their previous studies and show a strong potential to succeed in studies at an advanced level. Applicants normally hold a B.S. in an engineering discipline, physics, or in the life sciences (Chemistry, Biology, etc.). Admission normally requires a grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores of at least 1400 (verbal and quantitative) and 4.5 (written).
APPLICATION DEADLINES:
All application materials are due on the dates stated below.
M.S. Applicants:
ALL Applicants
Fall Term - January 15th
Ph.D. Applicants:
ALL Applicants
Fall Term - December 15th
IF YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN A RACKHAM PROGRAM, WE REQUIRE:
- Rackham application.
- Statement of purpose - academic.
- Personal statement.
- 3 letters of recommendation.
- Official transcripts.
- Official general GRE report (note that the general GRE is not required for the MS program - program code 00095).
- Official TOEFL report, if applicable.
Please note that all of the above materials must be submitted through the on-line application. Although the BME Department will accept copies of transcripts through the on-line application, Rackham requires official transcripts.
GRE AND TOEFL CODES:
GRE Institution code - 1839 GRE scores are good for 5 years
Department code - 1603
TOEFL Institution code - 1839 TOEFL scores are good for 2 years
PROGRAM CODES FOR BME:
M.S. Program - 00095
Ph.D. Program - 00094
M.S. APPLICANTS (00095):
Apply to the masters program only if the M.S. will be your terminal U of M Biomedical Engineering degree (that is, you do not intend to continue into the Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. program).
Applicants who do not hold a Masters degree but intend to pursue a Ph.D. at U of M Biomedical Engineering must apply directly to the Ph.D. program (see below).
PH.D. APPLICANTS (00094):
Applicants who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering should apply to this program. If you do not currently hold a relevant masters degree, you will earn it during the first two years of the Ph.D. program.
IF YOU ARE APPLYING AS A READMISSION, CHANGE OF PROGRAM OR DUAL DEGREE, WE REQUIRE:
- Rackham application (Readmission, Change of Program or Dual Degree).
- Statement of purpose - academic (for BME).
- Personal statement (for BME).
- 3 new letters of recommendation.
- Copies of the materials that were submitted for admission in your current department (letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.). Please contact your current department and ask them to forward them to Maria Steele.
- Official general GRE report (if they were not included in the materials from your current department).
- Official TOEFL report (if applicable, and if they were not included in the materials from your current department).
- If you are applying for a dual degree, you will also need to complete a Dual/Joint Degree Election Form. This form will need to be reviewed and signed by each department.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Students with a bachelor of science degree in engineering or physics should present a minimum background of:
- One course in biochemistry
- One course in either basic biology or introductory physiology, including a laboratory experience
- One course in a generally related area of the biological sciences such as anatomy, microbiology, experimental psychology, physiology, pharmacology, etc.
Students with a bachelor of science or bachelor of arts degree with majors such as experimental psychology, physiology, microbiology, zoology, or biochemistry must present the above background required of engineers, plus the following:
- Two terms of college physics
- Mathematics through differential equations
- One course in basic electronic circuits
- Two courses in either mechanics, fluid mechanics, or thermodynamics
The admissions committee frequently admits students who have not completed all of the listed prerequisites during their undergraduate studies. These students must complete the prerequisites. Completing these courses will be in addition to the requirements stipulated for the Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedical Engineering. It should be noted that course credits from prerequisites are not applied toward the graduate degree.
Under special circumstances some students may petition to waive the non-mathematics and non-physics prerequisites. A petition to waive prerequisites must be submitted to the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Education Committee (GEC).
If you have any questions, please contact Maria Steele (msteele@umich.edu).
