Graduate Program FAQs

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Should I apply to the College of Engineering or to the Rackham Graduate School?

Applicants to the BME graduate program apply through Rackham, not the College of Engineering.

Are application fee waivers available?

Rackham has limited funds for fee waivers. Click here for more information.

How long does it generally take to complete an M.S. degree?

1.5 - 2 years

How long does it generally take to complete a Ph.D. degree?

4 - 6 years.

Do I need to have an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering to apply?

No. Successful past applicants have had undergraduate degrees in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics.

I have a B.S. degree and am interested in the Ph.D. program. Should I apply to the M.S. or Ph.D. program?

Applicants who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. should apply to the Ph.D. program. If the applicant does not currently hold a relevant master's degree, he or she will earn it during the first two years of the Ph.D. program.

I have an M.S. degree and am interested in the Ph.D. program. Do I need to take only the coursework that is required for the Ph.D. program?

Applicants who accept an offer of admission complete a Course Plan of Study Form. This form lists the courses required to make their prior M.S. degree "relevant." These courses must be satisfactorily completed in addition to those required for the Ph.D. program.

Do you accept applications for all terms?

We accept applications for the fall term only.

What is the deadline for the M.S. program?

All application materials for the M.S. program must be received by January 15th.

What is the deadline for the Ph.D. program?

All application materials for the Ph.D. program must be received by December 15th.

Do you require the general or subject GRE?

The general GRE is required for applicants to the Ph.D. program. Neither is required for the M.S. program.

What is the minimum GRE guideline?

The general GRE test is required of all PhD applicants. Our focus is on the student's academic and research potential. Since GRE scores have been shown to have little or no correlation with student excellence in research at the University of Michigan, we do not require a minimum score for the combined Verbal and Quantitative tests or for the Analytical Writing test.

How long are GRE scores valid?

Five years. We accept scores that expire during the application process providing the application is submitted before the expiration date.

What are the institution and department codes for the GRE?

Institution code: 1839
Department code: 1603

Do all international students need to take the TOEFL?

Applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's or master's degree from an institution where the exclusive language of instruction is English are exempt from submitting an Official English Proficiency Score. Verification from the school may be required. Additional information is available on Rackham's website.

What is your minimum TOEFL requirement?

Computer-Based TOEFL: 220
Internet-Based TOEFL: 84
Paper/Pencil TOEFL: 560

How long are TOEFL scores valid?

Two years. We accept scores that expire during the application process providing the application is submitted before the expiration date.

What are the institution and department codes for the TOEFL?

Institution code: 1839
Department code: 99

What is the minimum GPA guideline?

Admission normally requires a grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. This is a guideline and not a strict requirement.

I attended an institution that does not have a 4.0 grading scale. How do I convert it?

Rackham will evaluate your official transcript and convert it to a 4.0 scale.

How important are the statement of purpose and personal statement?

Extremely important. They are critical to both the admissions decision and the awarding of fellowships and GSI/GSRA positions.

What should be included in the statement of purpose?

The statement of purpose should include your research interests and the name(s) of faculty with whom you are interested in working.

What should be included in the personal statement?

The personal statement should include information on your life experiences and background, including what led you to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering.

How many letters of recommendation are required?

Three. Your recommenders should be those best qualified to speak to your academic and research skills.

Can the recommenders mail letters to the Department or are they required to submit them online?

We prefer to receive letters electronically with the online application. If a recommender is unable to submit a letter online, he or she should mail it to:

Maria Steele
Senior Student Administration Assistant - Graduate Program
Department of Biomedical Engineering
The University of Michigan
2200 Bonisteel Blvd.
1113 Carl A. Gerstacker Bldg.
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2099

Do I need to submit official transcripts?

Rackham requires official transcripts sent directly as part of the application process. The Department prefers to receive unofficial transcripts sent electronically with the online application. If you are unable to submit unofficial transcripts online, please mail them to:

How can I check the status of my application?

Once the Department receives an application and it is entered into the Department's database, the applicant will receive an email message indicating which materials have been received and which are missing. Applicants who would like to verify receipt of materials by the Department after this point may email Maria Steele.

Applicants who would like to check the status of materials sent to Rackham, including GRE or TOEFL scores, may check Rackham's website.

ADMISSION DECISION

How does the admissions process work?

It is a two-step process. The Department recommends applicants for admission, but Rackham must finalize all admissions decisions based on its requirements. Applicants will be notified by email if Rackham requires additional information.

When will I be notified of the decision on my application?

The Department usually makes its decisions by the end of April and notifies applicants by email shortly thereafter.

I received a letter from the Department stating that I have been recommended for admission. Does this mean that I can accept the offer?

Not until Rackham has finalized your admission.

I have been admitted but would like to defer my application. Is this possible?

Admitted applicants may be allowed to defer their enrollment for one year. To defer, please email Maria Steele.

I received a letter from the Department stating that my application has been rejected. Can I reapply?

You can reapply for a future term, but you must submit all new materials.
