Graduate Program FAQs
Should I apply to the College of Engineering or to the Rackham Graduate School?
Applicants to the BME graduate program apply through Rackham, not the College of Engineering.
How long does it generally take to complete an M.S. degree?
1.5 - 2 years
How long does it generally take to complete a Ph.D. degree?
4 - 6 years.
Do I need to have an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering to apply?
No. Successful past applicants have had undergraduate degrees in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics.
I have a B.S. degree and am interested in the Ph.D. program. Should I apply to the M.S. or Ph.D. program?
Applicants who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. should apply to the Ph.D. program. If the applicant does not currently hold a relevant master's degree, he or she will earn it during the first two years of the Ph.D. program.
I have an M.S. degree and am interested in the Ph.D. program. Do I need to take only the coursework that is required for the Ph.D. program?
Applicants who accept an offer of admission complete a Course Plan of Study Form. This form lists the courses required to make their prior M.S. degree "relevant." These courses must be satisfactorily completed in addition to those required for the Ph.D. program.
I have not completed all of the prerequisites. Can I still apply?
Each applicant's background and preparation is evaluated during the admissions process. Our Admissions Committee frequently recommends applicants for admission who have not completed all prerequisites as undergraduates. These applicants must complete these courses as graduate students, usually in their first year of coursework.
Can I update my application materials after my application has been submitted?
Once an application is submitted, the materials cannot be modified. Please review your application carefully before you submit it.
Can I apply to more than one Rackham program?
Yes, but you will need to submit a new application form, materials, and fee for each program that you apply to.
What is the cost of tuition?
Information on tuition and fees is available on the Office of the Registrar's website.
Can I apply for a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering if I already received one from another university?
My application was rejected and I would like to apply for a future term. Can I use the same application?
Applicants who were not recommended for admission must submit a new application and pay the application fee. If the test scores are still valid, there is no need to send new scores.
Do you allow part-time students in your Ph.D. program?
Ph.D. students are required to be enrolled full-time during the fall and winter terms. Information on the registration policy is available on Rackham's website.
